stars, and how they are dying before our eyes

Finn Rose | poetry

i think that everyone must know by now

the time it takes for light to reach

the human eye and pupil

widened in the night like hungry mouths.

and about the fact, that’s neither fun nor fiction

that stars we see like litter in the sky

are dead and gone when we perceive them

looking into past from future

do they ever wonder

do they find within themselves a soul

to ask; what will they think of remnant light

that once was i and never will again

and dust from stars ground up by other stars or space and pressure

falls down to planets just like ours

forms life from death the circular thing it’s always been and always done and always will

i ask; what will they think of bones leftover

that never could and always tried to be

and ash from hands spread to both sides as shooting stars scar darkness bright-hot white

a single tear is shed in memoriam of yet another star thousand years long dead

and not forgotten

wished upon

and pointed at

and caught with camera lenses

i hope it knows that it is loved still
